Junior Board members are full, voting members of the Swarthmore Recreation Association Board of Directors — who happen still to be in high school. Junior Board members join the board in the summer after their sophomore year and serve for two years.
The SRA Board makes decisions about programming and policies, finances and capital development. Junior Board members are a part of it all. The volunteer position is valuable to SRA because it provides us with unique insight to our players and Mentors. The experience is valuable to the Junior Board members because it gives them a hands-on experience in the governance of a bustling, community-based non-profit.
One Junior Board Member position turns over in July each year. The online application for this year’s position will be available in early May and will consist of references and an essay. Candidates must be in tenth grade and live in the Wallingford-Swarthmore School District. The ideal candidate will have SRA experience, as a participant, volunteer, or employee. Candidates will be notified in June about selection decisions.
Junior Board members are expected to attend at least seven of SRA’s monthly Board meetings. Meetings are typically held on the third Thursday of each month at 7:15PM. Junior Board members also sit on one committee and may have some light committee obligations.
